Not many photos today, as for the first 3 hours we were re-tracing our steps back to Mariposa. Almost got a lucky break when the rental guy said if we didn't use them, we could just return them for a full refund - but the nasty old lady guarding the register said "it doesn't matter, they must still pay the $30" and greedily took our cash. I'm sure she was the same one who denied us last night for being 7 minutes late :o( Oh well, at least we could console ourselves with another fabulous coffee from the Pony Expresso! We saw this little beauty parked outside a Baptist ministry for sale, only $16,500! I did actually suggest trading in our rental, and completing the journey in style...
This cool handed luke we found while eating lunch outside the (closed, at least today) Merced Agricultural Museum. His come-hither hand betrayed his rather limp-wristed stance. I think he was missing something... turns out I was right - a mallet! He's one of the iconic California Muffler Men!
One of the many examples of hand-painted typography we saw in our travels - but that's another blog. Then it was back in the car, play the last CD (Prince's 1992 'Untitled' Album) for a long and uneventful drive (well-navigated by the experienced and - surely, by now - official co-driver Morag!) up highway 99 through Modesto, left onto Interstate 580 through Livermore and Oakland, across the San Mateo bridge and there we were - in the City by the Bay, the Paris of the West, gateway to the Pacific Ocean - San Francisco!
