Globe, Az to Willcox, Az (via Tombstone, Az)
Our 100-year-old butterfield stagecoach tour - sounds fantastic (and it was), but took 45 mins to basically walk the mules around the block. We saw the silver mines (off on the horizon), Cochise's (Geronimo's son) country, many old shacks in the town of Tombstone, and the courthouse gallows (with neck-ties still hanging!).
It's Wednesday October 26, 1881 in Tombstone, Arizona, Cochise County about 3pm at the OK Corral. The Erps (Wyatt, Virgil and Morgan) discuss what to do about the lawless Clantons and McLaurys. A feud had been burning for a while - involving the McLaury paw (each version of the story get quite blurred at this point, as even the lawmen were prosecuted by the local judge for 30 days, and both sides tell the story differently.
I believe this is Virgil Earp - a stylish lawman who intends to keep order in his town.
The Earps and the Clantons face off - who is going to leave, and who is going to get carried off in a wooden box?
After the street theatre, it's off to the tickets-only official stage - oops, I mean the O.K. CORRAL®
OK folks (ha ha, a little pun there) - this video will only work on the webpage version of this blog here. The whole gunfight, where over 30 shots were fired in about 30 seconds.
One less troublemaker - Billy Clanton, if I'm not mistaken.
The authentic crystal palace - apparently, only the wooden bar you see in the picture is new. We were able to count a number of bullet-holes in the ceiling - but perhaps it was just poor plastering...
Ian tries a buffalo burger for the first time - the culinary review: tasted like beef, but the texture was less pronounced. The fries were spectacular, however - double-fried (1/3 less than Heston Blumenthal's The Fat Duck, in Bray) but almost as good!
A surly wench outside the local saloon... more on this later in Tucson!
The sun sets over the Tombstone mine... and the lost souls of the cowboys at the O.K. Corral...
A dramatic drive back to the hotel, through extremely localised rain and hail - even lost sight of the road at one point!
