Springerville, Az to Winslow, Az
No, this is not the "Big Bang" or some piece of art work, it's Petrified Wood at the Petrified Forest. Miles and miles of what looks like stone which is actually wood from over 220 million years ago, caught up in flood waters and entrenched in the ground for all these years.
The visitors centre displayed these creatures to show the relativity of time with the forest, some other creature decided to converse with them!
This part of the forest then became the painted forest, these mountains show the gradients of time and depth of movement. They were both majestic and magnificent as the sun began to set. This shot shows the vastness of the area. As we passed through, the lazy sounds of Beth Orton filled the emptiness.
The desert inn (designed by Mary Colter), in the Petrified Forest National Park (and was used as an actual inn when the old Route 66 went through here)
Hundreds of petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock, in the petrified forest (look closely!).
Morag takes a back seat, waiting for the next lightning strike. This seat was of course was on the 'mother road'.
Ian decides the rental car isn't fast enough to escape the coming storm. The only way to get in the car was through the roof - we have some other great shots of this (as you can imagine)!
